A Striking Transformation of the Mezzanine in the Heart of the CBD.
Significant constraints on-site access for deliveries and its location within an operational environment required detailed methodologies to mitigate noise, dust and impact to base building services and operations.
The installation of the ceiling which consists of over 18,000 dowels of 59 different lengths individually suspended to form an undulating pattern required complex planning, careful coordination with services and joinery and innovative modifications to standard services outlets to minimise the impact on the elaborate ceiling design. A significant steel structure was required to bridge primary mechanical ductwork servicing the tower that also required careful coordination with the detailed ceiling.
Installation of a new raw steel staircase utilising tensioned stainless-steel mesh as a balustrade linking ground floor to the mezzanine, constructed over a reflective pool created further integration challenges.
Graphite worked in conjunction with DJC, Siren Design and Adriano Pupilli to creatively solve day to day design and buildability issues, providing value engineered solutions that honoured the design intent. This included the re-specification of the perimeter plenum mesh detail to laser cut custom wood that achieved the desired outcome within the program and made significant cost savings which were passed directly to the client.
The successful collaborative approach has restored an important Sydney social tradition to the city’s landscape.
